Panoptic refers to a type of visual surveillance system that observes and records the activities of individuals. It is based on the principle of constant observation, which is made possible by the use of cameras, sensors, and other monitoring devices. The term "panoptic" is derived from the Greek roots pan (all) and optikos (seeing), and it was originally coined by the philosopher Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century to describe a proposed design for a prison that would allow for complete visibility and control of the inmates. Today, the concept of panopticism has been applied more broadly to describe any situation in which individuals are subjected to constant surveillance and exerted control.
